Porcelain Laminate
Porcelain laminate is a thin layer of porcelain applied directly to
the tooth surface.
It is prepared with minimal or no abrasion of the tooth surface to correct the appearance of the
anterior group of teeth. Superior aesthetic results are achieved thanks to their high light
transmittance.
Porcelain laminates can be used to improve the color of discolored teeth, change the
contours of malformed teeth, close gaps between teeth, and in smile design.
Advantages and disadvantages?
- Porcelain laminates transmit, reflect, and conduct light just like
natural tooth structure; thanks to this feature, they are indistinguishable from tooth tissue and offer
the best aesthetics.
- They can be produced in the desired color using materials with
superior aesthetic properties.
- Thanks to their shiny and smooth surfaces, food accumulation does not
occur on them.
- They do not absorb liquids. Color changes that can occur due to tea,
coffee, and cigarette use are not seen in porcelain laminates. They are long-lasting.
- They are in harmony with intraoral tissues. They do not have a
negative effect on gum health.
- Minimal abrasion (0.3- 0.7 mm) is made from the tooth surface during
the preparation stage. In small-scale aesthetic arrangements, it can be applied without abrasion.
- It is prepared in accordance with the smile design made suitable for
the face structure and according to the patient's expectations.
In Which Situations Can It Be Applied?
- An aesthetic appearance can be achieved with porcelain laminates in
tooth discolorations due to various reasons.
- Porcelain laminates can be applied in the presence of gaps (diastema)
between teeth or in the correction of minimal tooth crowding and positional disorders.
- Porcelain laminates with superior aesthetic properties can be made to
achieve perfect color and shape harmony in developmental morphology and color disorders.
- Smile aesthetics can be provided with porcelain laminates when tooth
lengths need to be extended or contours need to be arranged in the presence of malformed, worn, or
dark-colored teeth.
- Porcelain laminates can be made to arrange the contours of broken,
cracked, or surface-worn teeth.
- Porcelain laminates with superior surface properties and color
stability can be applied to improve the appearance of teeth with old or discolored non-aesthetic fillings.
In Which Situations Can It Not Be Applied?
- Porcelain laminates are produced in a very thin structure. They
cannot be applied to people with parafunctional habits such as advanced teeth clenching and grinding
(bruxism), nail biting, and pencil biting, as they may break due to excessive forces on the teeth.
- It cannot be applied to people with structural jaw disorders.
- It cannot be applied to teeth with advanced and untreatable gum
recession.
- It cannot be applied in the presence of large fillings on the tooth
surface because the perfect bond between the porcelain laminate and the tooth will be disrupted.
Treatment Stages?
First, jaw relationships, parafunctional habits, the patient's aesthetic expectations, and the condition of
the teeth and gums are evaluated, and a treatment plan is created. If deemed necessary, wax-up and mock-up
studies can show the patient beforehand how the teeth will look at the end of the treatment. At this stage,
no abrasion is made on the teeth. During this time, the patient's opinion about the shape, color, and size
characteristics of the teeth is taken, and thus desired changes can be made in the design of the laminates
to be made. Then, minimal abrasion is made under local anesthesia from the teeth where porcelain laminate
will be applied, and temporary laminates that the patient will use until the end of the treatment are
prepared. After the impression and rehearsal stages, porcelain laminates are bonded to the tooth with
special resin adhesives.
Treatment Duration?
Although it varies according to the current condition of the teeth, the extent of aesthetic requirements,
and the number of teeth to be applied, it can be completed within 7-10 days (including rehearsal stages).
